The following is an article written by Sam Hodges who covered the sale of the collection.
Prior to the sale at Christies in New York last year, about a 100 or so more items of Meissen were sold on Ebay.

During a long tenure as pastor at First Baptist Church of Dallas, W.A. Criswell impressed many believers with his fiery preaching and unshakeable commitment to conservative theology.

But in death, he has wowed experts at the famous Christie's art auction house, which on Thursday is selling more than 300 pieces of 19th-century Meissen porcelain he collected with his late wife, Betty.

"It's a huge collection," said Melissa Bennie, Christie's vice president and head of sales for 19th-century porcelain. "They were very discerning collectors, looking for pieces that were really intricately modeled and delicately painted."

Stately Home Robbery and Collecting - 13 June 2007

It is inevitable that we hear about thefts from stately homes from time to time. However by learning about what has been stolen gives us an insight into what has or is being collected and displayed in Stately Homes.

In the case of this Home in East Yorkshire it appears there was a strong selection of 19th century Meissen and since the collection was put together recently it proves that 19th century Meissen is very collectable.

When it comes to buying Laurence Mitchell recommends you buy the best quality that you can afford. In a little under three years the Meissen Manufactory will be celebrating its 3rd centenary. Do not wait until then to build your collection as you may be in for a shock when you find out the price of Meissen porcelain has increased substantially in value.

Excellence in the wokmanship of later 19th century Meissen porcelain - 27 May 2007
During the latter half of the 19th saw an important need for the Meissen Manufactory to update its kilns and introduce better techniques to improve on qulaity for a very expanding export market. During the next few months Laurence Mitchell will be demistifying this rather grey rather by illustrating the major differences between the normal quality of the period and pieces that appear to be of the same appearance but excel in quality. Two key employees of the Meissen manufactory who were responsible for these succinct changes were Ernst August Leuteritz and Emmerich Andresen. Please look for future announcements

Exciting Meissen Shopping Gallery - 27 May 2007

Meissen or not that is the question? - 25 May 2007
Laurence Mitchell is recieving many emails where pieces illustrated are painted or printed with a mark that is something other than a crossed swords. Please look at the image in the bottom left of the home page. If your piece doesnt have a mark that is similar to the crossed swords then it is unlikely to be of Meissen origin. During the coming months there will be a section illustrating all the marks used but until then please refer to the image box below.

About News Feeds linked the Meissen Blog page. - 30 March 2007

Some websites, ie newspapers, produce newsfeeds. Buymeissen picks up informtaion relating to Meissen. Sometimes there is relevant information reltaing to Meissen porcelain at other times the name of Meissen is picked up and little information is containted.  In the quote below the author discussed Vienna porcelain being the first Manufactory to have its mark copied. Unlike Meissen, may of the factories that used the Vienna mark, depending on what the item is can be as valuable as the original depending on the quality and theme of the painting. Wheras any manufactory that copied the Meissen mark, painting and modelling does not hold the same value.  Please see quote below.

'Plate valuable if authentic Royal Vienna

This dish was left to me by my mother. Can you tell me what it's worth?

The mark on the back under glaze blue is often called a beehive mark and is similar to the mark used by the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactury in Vienna, Austria and shortened to Royal Vienna. The mark is actually a shield taken from part of the coat of arms of the ruling royal family. The correct positioning of the mark is to have the flat side at the top. This factory was one of the first after Meissen to produce true porcelain'.
